David - Further Works Technician
David joined Detector Inspector two years ago on advice from a mate. In his time with the business he has enjoyed the comradery and support of his team and enjoys every minute of his role, working jobs including switchboard upgrades, asbestos removals and earthing to name a few.
How did you begin your journey with Detector Inspector?
I basically learned about the opportunity through a friend who used to work here. They mentioned that I would enjoy the work and that the environment was more relaxed. Considering my age and physical limitations, I needed to take a step back from tasks like getting into roofs and under floors. As I'm getting older, not younger, it was perfect for me to focus on more hands-on maintenance tasks rather than big jobs.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Basically, it's the people I work with, including the managers and my colleagues. I enjoy having a good crew to work with every day.
Can you share a memorable experience you've had on the job?
The majority of tenants are pretty good. They are welcoming and often offer cups of coffee while I'm working. Most are reasonable, although you do encounter the occasional grumpy person, which comes with the job. One memorable aspect is the support from managers. If there's something I can't get done, there's no pressure. We're provided with the right resources and can come back to it later.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I spend time with my family. The flexible hours allow for time off when needed, which is great for family commitments. We have a good crew at work, and everyone supports each other, so I feel comfortable taking time off. Overall, I prioritise looking after my family and spending time with them.
Ethan - Gas Service Technician
Meet Ethan, Gas Service Technician and proud graduate of Detector Inspector's Apprenticeship Program. Over the past four years, Ethan has tackled it all—installing and repairing gas appliances like hot water units and cooktops, as well as handling tasks like fixing dishwashers and taps—drawing on the extensive knowledge and skills he developed during his training.
How did you get started at Detector Inspector?
I used to work at a supplier that Detector Inspector used regularly. One day, one of their bosses called up asking if I’d be interested in joining the team, and that’s how I made the switch.
You came through the Apprenticeship Program. Can you tell me about your experience and what you enjoyed about it?
I had a really positive experience during my apprenticeship. I got to work with a lot of different plumbers, which helped me pick up heaps of tips and tricks of the trade. Plus, I had the chance to work all over Melbourne and visit places I’d never been before. Overall, it was a fantastic learning experience.
What does a typical day on the job look like for you?
Our main focus is maintaining and installing gas appliances, like hot water units, heaters, cooktops, and gas lines. But we also work on other things like dishwashers and taps—Detector Inspector pretty much does it all.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I really enjoy helping tenants, especially when they’re in tough situations. For example, if they’ve been without hot water, heating in the middle of winter, or cooking facilities, it’s rewarding to find the problem, fix it, and explain to them what went wrong. Seeing the relief and appreciation from them makes it all worthwhile.
How do you find most tenants to deal with?
Honestly, most tenants are pretty nice to deal with. It’s been a great way to learn how to work with people from all walks of life—people I probably wouldn’t have crossed paths with otherwise. It’s helped me grow as a person, learning to communicate and connect with such a wide variety of people.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I play soccer, and I like to make music in my spare time. Spending time with friends and family is really important to me as well. I also have a new puppy, which has been great—watching him grow and playing with him every day is a lot of fun.
Caesar - Smoke Alarm Technician
Meet Caesar, a Sydneysider who recently returned from a three-year hiatus to embark on his second journey with Detector Inspector. What drew Caesar back to the role? It wasn't just the allure of the work itself but the human connections he made and the opportunity to encounter new and fascinating individuals daily.
For Caesar, the flexible and supportive work-life balance offered by Detector Inspector was also a significant factor in his decision to return.
What drew you to start as a technician at Detector Inspector?
I was searching for a more exciting job outside of the typical office or factory environment. When I heard about the opportunity to work as a technician, it sounded perfect—driving around, visiting people's homes, and having meaningful interactions.
What do you enjoy most about your role as a field technician?
The human interaction is the highlight for me. While we don't always engage in lengthy conversations with tenants, meeting people with interesting lives and personalities is always enjoyable. Outside of these interactions, podcasts have become a big part of my day, driving from job to job. I reckon I've listened to every single episode of BBC's 'The History Hour' just this year.
Can you share a memorable experience you've had on the job?
I started working with Detector Inspector about four years ago while I lived in regional Victoria. It was one of my final days before heading to Europe to study, but I had a great chat with a tenant whose property I was servicing. Recently arrived in Australia, he shared with me that he was looking for work but didn't have any extensive experience or education. I encouraged him to perhaps head down to Melbourne and try to find a role as a labourer or contractor.
Two months later, I was in Europe and received an email from HR, saying that the tenant had written directly to the business about our chat and how positive the interaction was.
It was times like this that drew me back to work as a technician when I returned to Australia and Sydney a year and a half ago.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I enjoy staying active, particularly through beach volleyball, occasional surfing, and cycling. Being outdoors and participating in these activities helps me stay healthy and happy outside of work.
How do you manage work-life balance in your role?
I find the flexibility of being a technician beneficial. I can decide how many hours I want to work, allowing me to prioritise other aspects of my life. This flexibility, including choosing my start and finish times, contributes to a healthy work-life balance.
Michael - Smoke Alarm Technician
Michael joined Detector Inspector seeking a shift from call center work to face-to-face customer service. His journey with Detector Inspector began just over a year ago, and since then, he has found immense satisfaction in his role.
What drew you to start as a technician at Detector Inspector?
I was looking to transition from working in a call center for the government back to face-to-face customer service. When I saw the ad to work as a smoke alarm technician at Detector Inspector, it seemed like the perfect fit – no more desk work, just customer service on the go. The timing was impeccable, and I've been loving it ever since.
What do you enjoy most about your role as a field technician?
I love the customer service aspect. Every day, I get to meet and interact with 15 to 20 new people. It's incredibly rewarding.
Can you share a memorable experience you've had on the job?
One of the perks of the job is getting to meet a variety of pets. When I come home, my kids always ask about the interesting pets I encountered that day. One particularly memorable experience was meeting a lady who rescues bats. She invited me to see the bats she had rescued, and it was fascinating to see such unique animals up close. They were so cute.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I'm a handyman at heart. I enjoy photography, particularly abstract photography. Additionally, I like working with my hands – whether it's carving spoons from wood, repairing things around the house, or doing leatherwork like belts and wallets. So even though I do it at work, I do it when I get home as well.
Mark - Smoke Alarm Technician
Mark is a recent Detector Inspector team member, having joined the business just four months ago. Former colleagues with current South Australian Account Manager Craig Cram, Mark was excited to start a new career.
How did you get started in your role?
I was at a point where I needed a fresh start. My previous job wasn’t giving me the stability or security I needed, especially with a young family to support. When I started, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the South Australian Account Manager, Craig Cram, was working with DI; he and I worked together at ETSA 20 years ago!
What do you enjoy most about your role as an electrician?
While only being here for just four months, it was apparent very early on that no two days were the same. Some days can fly by quickly, with smoke alarm inspections all going smoothly and to plan. Some days, we can run into issues on job that require some troubleshooting and the support of my supervisor to resolve. It certainly keeps things interesting!
What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I’m quite proud to say that I’m quite a handy 10 pin bowler. I’ve been bowling for years and really enjoy it, and every week I head out with my son, who’s living out of home; to catch up and have a bowl. I absolutely love it. I also love to fish when I get some time on the weekends.
Travis - Gas Service Technician
Travis Blackney joined Detector Inspector through the Type-A Gas Fitter Apprenticeship Program and is currently in his fourth year as an apprentice. He has been gaining valuable hands-on experience and is on the path to becoming a certified journeyman plumber. Travis's dedication and skill have not only been recognised within the company but also in the industry at large.
In 2023, Travis was nominated for an industry award for 'Most Outstanding 1st Year Apprentice' – a significant achievement! His supervisor at the time, Ian, was consistently impressed with Travis's skill and work ethic.
Travis continues to excel and is on the road, making Australian homes safer every day.

Travis has been a valuable member of the Detector Inspector team since 2020. Since becoming his supervisor in June 2022, I have been impressed with the pace at which he learned new skills and his dedication to the role. There is a lot to absorb as a gas service apprentice, and Travis has achieved success by facing each challenge with a positive attitude. I am very grateful to have such a committed, reliable, and likable guy in the team, and I am very excited to watch him develop into an accomplished gas service technician. Travis has a great future ahead of him; this nomination is well deserved and a testament to the commitment and enthusiasm he has demonstrated since embarking on his apprenticeship journey.
What motivated you to start this apprenticeship?
I had been in another apprenticeship for about ten years but wanted a change. A friend who worked at Detector Inspector encouraged me to apply. I had the necessary tools and a car license, so I was ready to hit the ground running. It was a great decision, and I've been happy with the support and opportunities provided.
Can you share your experience with the apprenticeship program?
The apprenticeship program has been excellent. From the initial interview to getting set up in trade school, everything was smooth and efficient. The teachers at the trade school are great – they make learning enjoyable and are always ready to help. The support from the Detector Inspector team has also been fantastic.
What does a day-to-day look like for you on the job?
Day-to-day, we plan our work locations the night before. I usually start my day by picking up stock or orders for the job, then move from job to job. I'm always working with someone, and the team I work with is fantastic – they teach me new tricks and share their vast knowledge.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I love the variety in my job. Every day brings different types of jobs, which keeps things interesting. There are always new challenges that keep me on my toes and engaged.
Do you have any memorable experiences or stories from the job?
Most of the memorable moments come from funny mistakes and the camaraderie we share. We always look out for each other and ensure safety, but we also have fun and joke around. It's a great environment where everyone helps each other improve.
How do you find interacting with tenants?
I really enjoy meeting new people. The tenants I've met are usually very kind and welcoming. They often offer a drink or a snack, and it's nice to be treated with such hospitality. It's a mutual respect that makes the job enjoyable.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I coach my kids' basketball teams. I have a daughter and a son, and I love spending time teaching them sports, just like I was taught when I was a kid. It's rewarding to help them grow and develop their skills.
Franco - Electrician
Franco joined Detector Inspector after a decade working in the mines. Seeking a specialised electrical role, he started with a contract position and quickly secured a permanent role. Now in his fourth year, Franco thrives in his varied work and values the supportive team environment.
Can you tell us a bit about your journey to Australia and your career background?
I came to Australia in 2012. I was sponsored to work in the mines. I worked FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) for ten years – five years at one mine and five years at another. After a decade in the mines, I decided to take some time off. I wanted to transition to a specialised electrical job. When a contract electrician position opened up with Detector Inspector, I applied and was initially brought in for just the one job. Once the project was completed, I was offered a permanent role. I'm now at the start of my fourth year with Detector Inspector.
How has your work evolved over the years?
When I first started, we focused on upgrade installations, completing as many as possible each day. These days, my work is more varied – I handle upgrade installations, further works, servicing, and fault finding.
Can you share a memorable experience from your time at Detector Inspector?
A memorable experience was when I went to train a colleague in Tasmania. I visited Launceston to understand how their alarm systems are managed. What stood out was the genuine nature of the people. The colleague I trained was one of the nicest people I've ever met. He even opened his house to me, making it a fabulous experience.
What do you consider the best aspect of your job?
One of the best aspects of my job is my boss, Joel. It is a privilege to work with and for him. I have never had a negative outcome in any interaction with him, whether he calls me or I call him.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I used to be heavily involved in JetSki fishing with my brothers-in-law and friends. Although I don't go out regularly anymore, I still enjoy fishing from time to time.
Jai - Electrician
Jai joined Detector Inspector to transition from a mining and commercial construction background to working locally. Through a friend's recommendation, he found the perfect opportunity to stay closer to home while contributing to safety. He now enjoys a fulfilling role with Detector Inspector, combining his passion for electrical work with meaningful community impact.
What drew you to start as an electrician with Detector Inspector?
I heard about Detector Inspector through a close friend who was heavily involved in setting up the electrical division in QLD. Coming from a mining and commercial construction background where I often worked away from home, this was a perfect opportunity to work locally.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
What I enjoy most about working for Detector Inspector is meeting new people and doing something that helps save lives. Each day is different, with new challenges. I love educating clients about smoke alarms and appreciate the flexibility and work-life balance Detector Inspector offers. We have a great team in QLD, and it’s been a pleasure helping the division grow.
Do you have any memorable moments or experiences while on the job?
I've had many memorable moments at Detector Inspector. Some that come to mind are the generosity of tenants, who have offered me tea, coffee, food, and even gifts for my son.
What do you like to do outside of work?
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family. My hobbies include playing and listening to music, going to the gym, bike rides, and fishing with my son.
Mason - Smoke Alarm Technician Supervisor
After five years in customer service, Mason sought a more challenging role and began his journey as a smoke alarm technician with Detector Inspector. He quickly moved up, taking on asset management roles, and into his current role as a smoke alarm technician supervisor.
Mason highlights the importance of relationship skills as a smoke alarm technician, as they often work alone on the road. Building good relationships with tenants and their supervisor is key. In his current office-based role, he cherishes the camaraderie in his team, who are all around the same age, have become close friends.
What is your background? How did you get into your role?
I was originally in customer service for five years. I wanted something a bit different and more intense, so I started as a smoke alarm tech in the field. I enjoyed it but wanted to see how far up I could get. I moved into an assets role in the warehouse, managing cars and rostering. I moved to Queensland for my current role as a supervisor but realised I didn’t like the weather, so I decided to move back to the Victorian office.
What are the key skills and qualities required for the smoke alarm technician role?
Probably relationship skills. Being out on the road as a smoke tech can feel pretty isolating, so knowing how to communicate with tenants and your supervisor is important. Just having a chat and building relationships on the road is tricky, but some techs have groups of friends already, which is good.
What is your favourite thing about working at Detector Inspector?
The office and my team of supervisors. We are all around the same age, so we get along really well. I enjoy the office environment and have made some really good friends, some of whom I hope to keep for the rest of my life.
Candice - Smoke Alarm Technician
After returning from maternity leave, Candice found the flexibility she needed to balance her career and young family. Previously a beauty therapist, Candice sought a role that didn’t require nights and weekends. Detector Inspector offered her the perfect opportunity to choose her hours and days, making it ideal for her family life.
Tell us about your background and how you got into this line of work.
I got into this work after maternity leave. In a previous life, I was a beauty therapist, but all the jobs I was applying for required working nights and weekends, which I couldn’t do with a small family. Then I found this job, where I could pick my hours and days, and it was much more suitable for people with young families, so I thought, why not?
What’s your favorite thing about working at Detector Inspector?
The flexibility around working hours. I have a young family, so work-life balance is very important to us as a family.
What are the key skills and qualities of a smoke alarm technician?
Being polite, being a people person, being punctual, being ready for anything that can possibly happen in the field, and just enjoying what you do.
Do you have any memorable experiences on the job?
Most tenants are grateful if you come in on time and do a good job. Most say thanks, and one time, a tenant gave me cookies!
