Why is there a higher cost in the first year?

The Safer Home subscription is a pre-paid subscription service plan. It's designed to provide you with the coverage you need to know your property is compliant and the mandatory services are taken care of from the time the property is enrolled. In addition to covering the cost of the services, it includes a range of value adds that mean peace of mind for you that if issues arise, we'll be there. One of the features of the Safer Home plan is a low annual fee. In year 1, that low annual fee is not enough to cover the cost of delivering all the services, resulting in higher costs in that first year. To soften the impact, we offer a low up-front fee and split payments (for properties that require gas safety checks) in the first year of your subscription. In the second year (and each year thereafter), only the annual recurring service fee is payable. The annual recurring service fee covers: the cost of the smoke alarm service that is carried out each year; and contributes 50% toward the cost of the other services included in your plan. In this way, you are paying the larger fees in instalments, rather than in larger lumpy amounts every other year.

Why is there an annual recurring service fee every year if gas and electrical checks are required every 2 years?

Smoke alarms must be checked every year and electrical and gas safety checks must be performed at least every 2 years. There are a number of reasons supporting the approach we’ve taken. First, it means you have smooth, predictable, equal payments from years 2 onwards. Second, it allows us to extend a 10% discount on the price of the individual services. Third, we can extend a range of benefits connected to, but different from the services. These include free callouts for issues with checked items. For example, did you know that to get someone out to urgently relight a pilot light at your property could cost you well in excess of $100 for the plumbers time? With the Safer Home plan, this would be done at no charge to you. It also includes free parts for some standard items when they fail. For example, did you know that replacing a thermocouple in your gas heater could set you back over $150 including time and parts? With the Safer Home plan, this would be replaced and the issue rectified at no charge to you. These are just some of the benefits that we are able to extend under the Safer Home subscription plans.

How have you calculated the 10% discount for Safer Home plans?

Why does the number of gas appliances influence the price I pay from year 2 onwards?

Every home has electricity and smoke alarms, but not every home has gas connected. Additionally, at some homes like apartments, there may only be one gas appliance, such as a gas cooktop. Based on feedback from owners, we have looked to tailor pricing based on the needs of each property. This has allowed us to offer multiple plans. All the plans include the essential electrical and smoke alarm services but the number of gas appliances at the property determines the right ongoing plan for every property.

I already receive Detector Inspector services. Can I get a reduction in fees?

Yes. Where you are an existing Detector Inspector customer of our smoke alarm or gas services, a rebate will be calculated as follows: (service fee paid/number of days remaining = rebate amount) and applied to your first year's invoice.

When do I pay the subscription fee?

Upon enrollment, we will invoice you for the smoke alarm and electrical safety checks. Following your electrical safety check, where gas is found to be present at the property, your Safer Home subscription plan will be upgraded based on the number of gas appliances, and an additional invoice will be issued. From year 2 onwards, the subscription is renewed on each anniversary. These invoices will be issued either directly or through your agency.

When does the subscription commence?

The subscription commences on the date of invoice.

How do I pay for the services?

If you're managed by one of our partner agencies, we'll arrange payment via your agency in the usual way. If you're working with us directly, we'll invoice you directly.

Unlike a once-off safety check with no additional benefits that local tradespeople/companies commonly provide, our Safer Home plans are subscription services, providing enduring protection for your properties all year round. Q: Are there discounts available if I own multiple properties?

Yes. For 4 or more properties, you will be eligible for a further 5% discount. If you're a block owner, for 10 or more apartments in a single block, you will be eligible for a further 10% discount. In all cases, these additional discounts will be automatically applied and shown in your first year's invoice.

Q: When will the services be carried out?

The services will be carried out as soon as practicable following the commencement of the subscription. In most cases, the services will not be performed on the same day as experience has shown it creates a range of issues for both trades.

How does the Comply Now, Pay Later model work?

Do the compliance plans renew automatically?

I’ve have had all required services completed by another provider. Do I receive a complimentary coverage period?

When will the services be carried out?

We will use best endeavours to complete the safety checks to ensure the ongoing compliance of your property with the RTA obligations. This means smoke alarm safety checks completed at least every year and electrical and gas safety checks completed at least every 2 years. Where the safety checks are to be done for the first time at the property, we will complete them as soon as practicable.

I have gas at the property. Should I choose a Safer Home plan that includes a gas safety check?

Yes. If your property has gas, you must select a Safer Home plan that includes a gas safety check during enrollment. This can be for either one gas appliance only or two or more gas appliances.

After enrollment, if gas appliances are identified at your property, a gas safety check will be automatically added to your Safer Home plan through a "gas upgrade." This may occur in the following scenarios:

We’ve previously visited the property and recorded that it has gas.
Your agency confirms the presence of gas at the property.
During an electrical safety check, our electricians identify the existence of gas and the number of gas appliances.

If added in error, we will refund additional fees paid in excess of the property's requirements.
